Management coaching and Leadership Mentoring can be extremely helpful to people at any level, but especially Management Executive, Senior Officer or those whose time is precious.

And it is also important that that is conducted by an experienced former senior executive whose role is to ask questions and listen, helping you learn for yourself.

Generally that coach should have experience in the level similar to that of the coachee, and will certainly be prepared to invest time in understanding the context in which the contribution will have an effect. 

Universal Brains’ coaches and mentors are fully qualified many at post-graduate diploma level and have wide experience of many operating environments. Particularly our Chief Executive Officer has his own deep experience in working at British/German entities in Japan for more than 15 years and knows well about HR issue, organization, strategic dialogue with people and issues of change management.

He is enthusiastic in this particular field and has good coaching relationship with Management Executives.

How coaching works?

There are many areas where coaching can make a real difference, such as  

 RelationshipsDeveloping an individual's awareness of how they communicate and behave and the impact this may have on others, and enhancing their ability to respond assertively to others and manage difficult working relationships caused by perceived unacceptable hehaviors, aggression or conflict.
PerformanceHelping individuals-or teams-who are struggling to reach the standards expected, or who have identified aspects of themselves that they wish to change over time.
The coaching process

Coaching takes several forms but a common feature is that it is always client-led. We start by asking the coachee to identify the key issues and features of the current situation, hot real-life issues, and what they would like to be doing differently as a result of any intervention. Of course we often talk about something different to that which we had originally planned to discuss- this is because the process is non-directive. Whilst retaining a long-term focus on the original outcomes, a good coach will allow the coachee to talk about issues that are relevant to them at that moment.

Topics range from business development and marketing through to client relationship or even workplace employee relationships, performance management and personal behaviors at work.

Having said so, it is our general practice to agree what is to be undertaken, goals and how success will be measured. The conflicting issues of confidentiality will need to be clarified at the outset.  Other ‘rules of engagement’ would be agreed and review of success should be held at the end of coaching program. These all are part of customization to your situation, venue, at your venue, at a time and place to suit you.

It is recommended to have coaching sessions last for around 1.5 hours to 2 hours.  Typically it is structured as this: (rather stereo-typed, sorrry but all depend on you!)

  1.  Identifying and setting goals.
  2. Helping the coachee understand what's really happening around them, and drawing out the consequences of possibilities, optios and proposals.
  3. setting the parameters for the next stage (if applicable) what will they acheive and by when 'SMART'ly.
  4. Recapping-asking the coachee to recap on the objectives, what has been agreed, and what he/she will do by the next session.

The coaching contract will set out the duration of the coaching, and the frequency and length of the sessions within that period. It will make clear the etiquette of the coaching relationship - for example, what each party should do if they need to reschedule appointments. The contract will suggest what needs to be done between sessions in order for agreed goals to be achieved, and the availability of the coach between sessions.There will be guidelines regarding what is required from the coaching relationship in order for optimum results to be achieved. The coach needs honest feedback from the client about how well the coaching is working - different people may need different approaches.

Equally, the client must be able to take on board frank feedback from the coach if they are to move forward past existing blocks.The contract will emphasize that everything discussed during coaching is confidential and will not be revealed by the coach or used for the coach's own personal gain.The payment structure will be clearly set out, including the frequency of payments, which are normally requested in advance.
